The third production stage of the Aikhal Underground Diamond Mine is scheduled to be commissioned on April 6, Interfax reported citing ALROSA (RTS: ALRS). In this case Aikhal will reach its design capacity. Currently, the Aikhal Mine is able to produce 250,000 tons of ore per year, while after the launch of its third stage it will annually extract 500,000 tons of ore.

The Aikhal kimberlite pipe is one of the oldest diamond fields of ALROSA. Its open-pit mining began in 1961 and was carried out for over 30 years. It was completed in 1997 and underground mining started from that year on with its first stage put into operation in 2005.

In the first six months of 2012, Aikhal produced 546,000 carats of diamonds, which is 4.2 times higher than a year before. It is the sixth largest diamond mine of ALROSA by volume.

ALROSA is implementing an extensive program for the construction of underground mines in its diamond fields. Currently, the company runs the Internatsionalny Underground Mine (its design capacity being 500,000 tons of ore per year) and Mir Mine (which is producing 500,000 tons of ore and is expected to reach its full capacity of 1,000,000 tons in 2014). The first stage of the Udachny Underground Mine is to be commissioned in 2014.

Previously, ALROSA predicted that its ore output from underground mines in 2013 would go up by more than 15% compared to the year of that forecast. The company plans to drive its diamond output from underground mines to about 10 million carats (within the planned total of 34,5 million carats).
